19th May 2009 Media Release: Members of the auxiliary arm of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at New Zealand held their inaugural fundraising Walkathon last Saturday 16th May and donated $2,500 to the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind. The Ahmadiyya community is a very small organisation of 245 members in New Zealand serving humanity and fostering peace and harmony.
The auxiliary arm of the community called Majlis Ansarullah New Zealand, meaning ‘helpers of Allah’ features members 40 years and above decided to contribute to humanity as part of the organizations global commemoration of the 100 years of Khilafat (Successor hood).
The National President of the auxiliary organization, Mr. Mohammed Iqbal said “based in Wiri, we decided to use the Islamic teachings of helping our people and our neighbours first. The Royal NZ Foundation of the Blind being our neighbours became the obvious choice”.
The event was blessed with excellent weather on Saturday, starting at 10.30AM, the 23 walkers were well into their pace of the 10 kilometre walk which lasted under 2 hours followed by a sumptuous BBQ. Receiving the donation from the Mr. Mohammed Iqbal, National President for the auxiliary organisation, the representative for the Royal NZ Foundation of the Blind, Ms. Alison Kovach was very appreciative of the donation and remarked that this was the highest amount that the Foundation had ever received from a walkathon fundraiser event.
Given the favourable response, the community has decided to make this an annual event with a view to engaging more people from outside their own community to build a greater understand between cultures and religions and working for a common goal to helping the needy.
